Sports massage can be given pre-event (before), post-event (after) or maintenance (in between events or workouts)
1) PRE-EVENT
is done before a competition or practice. It focus is to increase circulation, range of motion of the joints, decrease tightness and hypertonicity of major joints and muscles, and stimulate the body for the competition or workout.
2) POST-EVENT
is done after an event or practice. The objective is to relax the tight muscles, decrease muscle soreness, facilitate faster recovery time, relieve cramping, increase lymphatic circulation and removal of post-activity metabolites, and relax the nervous system. This treatment acts as a cool down to relax hypertonic or tight and wiry, muscle tension and to avoid cramps. The post-event massage can help prevent delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). DOMS is pain felt 8 to 24 hours after exertion. The pain will peak at around 48 hours after the event and will decrease after a few days. DOMS is decreased if performed within two hours after stopping strenuous exercise.
